The odds for 50/50 bets are simply 2, meaning you can double your bet if you win. However, the presence of the number zero gives the casino an edge.

The Martingale Strategy

The Martingale strategy involves doubling your bet after a loss and stopping after a win. Let’s see how this strategy works with an example:

  • Starting with a bankroll of $150, bet $10 on a 50/50 event (e.g., red or black).
  • If you win, stop and cash out with a $10 profit.
  • If you lose, double your bet to $20 and bet on the same event.

  • If you win, stop and cash out with a $10 profit.
  • Repeat the process until you either win or lose four consecutive bets.

The probability of losing four consecutive bets is only 6.95%, which means there is a 93.05% chance of leaving the casino with a win.

Should You Use the Martingale Strategy?

Despite its promising appearance, the Martingale strategy is not recommended. If you lose four consecutive bets, you will face a significant loss. The expected value calculation shows that this strategy is not profitable in the long run. It is important to remember that the house always has an edge, and strategies like the Martingale cannot overcome it.
